Used Toyotas Near Worcester, MA
Toyota has been available in the US since 1957, having established its corporate offices in California. Sales began for the 1958 model year and totaled a modest 288 vehicles, consisting entirely of 287 Toyopet Crown sedans and one lonely Land Cruiser.

Toytota sales in Worcester were very slow at first- because so were the cars. At least for the American market. The one model was woefully underpowered and worst of all- overpriced for the market.
Toyopet sales were terrible, and by 1961 the model was dropped. In the meantime, the Land Cruiser, known for being a durable, off-road truck, became the only Toyota model available in the US until the mid-60s. |
The Toyota Corona was released in the Worcester Area in 1964 as a 1965 model. The six-passenger car had a 60-70 horsepower. In theory at least,it could reach 90 miles per hour. (Slightly slower on Worcester streets.) It was a modest hit. Sales reached 6,400 in 1965, and then 71,000 by 1968, nearly doubling each year until by 1971.
By the early 70s, Toyota was selling over 300,000 vehicles per year, a far cry from 1964's 2,000.

Corona, the first popular Toyota in Worcester, was designed specifically for American drivers. For it's time, it had adequate power, plus it was available with factory A/C and automatic trans. This boosted U.S. sales of Toyota vehicles three times over in 1966 to over 20,000 units. |
With the parking situation in Worcester being what it is, the car proved especially popular with Worcester Area drivers.
As more Americans discovered the quality and reliability of Toyota, sales continued to go up and up with no signs of slowing. The thrifty Corolla was introduced in 1968 and it was a huge success with Worcester drivers. By the end of 1975, Toyota surpassed Volkswagen to become the No. 1 import brand in the United States.

Today, Toyota is one of the world's largest manufacturers of automobiles in both unit sales and in net sales. In the United States, Toyota has roughly double the sales of Honda and is battling GM and Ford for #1. It produces over 5.5 million vehicles per year, equivalent to one every six seconds. |
